DGPS Equipment

Free Differential GPS support is provided by the graduate students from University of Texas at El Paso, Systems Ecology Laboratory from June 1– August 15 in Barrow and Atqasuk each Summer.  Schedule an appointment for us to tag along with your crew.  DGPS provides horizontal and vertical position with centimeter accuracy.

UNAVCO and the Barrow Arctic Science Consortium (BASC) operate a high-precision GPS (RTK and Post-process) surveying systems in Barrow and Atqasuk in support of National Science Foundation sponsored research.  The system provides centimeter level differential corrections to properly equipped users in the vicinity of the Barrow Environmental Observatory (BEO), allowing for stake-out surveys and real-time survey data collection. The equipment may also be used for post-processed static and kinematic surveys, and post-processing software is available from BASC.  The system is not compatible with hand-held GPS navigation receivers.  For more details about the system visit UNAVCO's website.  In addition, you may download a copy of the Barrow DGPS Handbook.

A Differential GPS Handbook is available for download below.  This document is not intended to replace training provided by UNAVCO.  The document includes the UNAVCO procedures and settings for rover set up and guidelines for planning different types of surveys (static, RTK, post-process.)  In addition, we have added supplemental documents which include details about the base station set up at Barrow, instructions for post processing data in Trimble Geomatics Office, exporting data and integrating DGPS data into ESRI's ArcGIS software.
